Since the 1950’s approximately 63% of traditional orchards have been lost from England. Commercial apple growing requires high density of low growing high cropping bushes not really orchards. In 2016 the opportunity arose for us to develop a community orchard. An orchard should not be just a place to grow fruit but an area where we can relax, play, work and even learn, almost an open air community hall. Barwick-in-Elmet’s orchard is located in Beckside on the southern end of the village, a peaceful wooded area by the side of the stream. Newly planted the orchard is still very much a work in progress but given time will have healthy crops of a variety of Apples, Pears, Plums, Cherries even Walnuts and Sweet Chestnuts. There will also be soft fruits.
